Just as a Christmas tree is simply a tree without its ornaments, a pizza is simply a sauce-doused crust without the perfect seasoning. That’s why we’ve decided to pay tribute to one of those little extra-something-specials that gives your meal reason and adds flavor the season. They call it oregano. We call it orega-YES!

First used by the Greeks, oregano is said to have been invented by Aphrodite herself as a gift to make man’s life happier. A couple thousand years and a near 6,000 miles later, Your Pie is still making lives happier with the inclusion of oregano on our ingredient list.

As fragrant as it is flavorful, this pungent spice originated in the same Mediterranean region as pizza, making the pairing nothing less than fate on a plate. The herb entered American spice racks in 1940 after returning GI’s yearned for the taste of pizza they had discovered in Italy. Often regarded as “the pizza herb,” oregano has long been the favorite accessory to many tomato-based recipes (especially brick-oven-baked personalized pizza pies… cough cough). However, it’s also used to season a vast array of other savory eats, lamb and egg dishes being two of our personal favorites.

So, can I throw oregano on any pizza from the Your Pie menu and come out with an oven-baked win? Well, yes. However, we do have a few must-try suggestions. Oregano works wonders as added flavoring to most meats, so try sprinkling it on top of Italian sausage or chicken. We also recommend combining it with a zest of basil to create that uniquely Italian flavoring.

If Mediterranean isn’t your region of choice, try adding oregano to our BBQ chicken pie. It gives the just the right kick to the sweetness of the barbeque, creating a sensory sensation that will make even the most aggressive of grillers swap their rock grates for pizza plates.

If you’re feeling crafty (and Your Pie is ALL about getting crafty), oregano also makes for a great holiday gift! Jar it up, tie it with a bow, and voila! Black Friday, eat your heart out.
