Pi Day Contest Winners Announced, over $600 in prizes awarded

Posted by on Mar 27, 2012 in Blog | 0 comments

Though we are sad that another Pi Day has come and gone, we want to take a moment to celebrate all the delicious goodness that was this year’s Pi Day.

On one glorious day every year in March, we celebrate Pi by selling Your Pie pizzas for only $3.14. People line up down the street to create their masterpiece and this year was no different. All of our Your Pie locations experienced a steady parade of eager customers looking to participate in the Pi Day excitement.

Along with the usual $3.14 pies, this year customers had the opportunity to participate in the Pi Day Contest to win $600+ worth of prizes. With 10 $31.40 Your Pie gift cards and one $314.00 Visa gift card on the line, the competition got fierce.

Customers could participate in the competition in a variety of ways including submitting their pizza in the What’s Your Pie competition, voting for their favorite pies on the facebook voting application or earning points through votes from their friends and family. And this year’s Pi Day contestants truly created an entertaining challenge.

Amanda Higginbotham, winner of this month’s What’s Your Pie contest, came out on top of the Pi Day Contest leaderboard throughout the competition earning a total of 240 points. Contestants. Throughout the course of the challenge, Amanda’s pizza, “All Choked Up,” climbed to the top of the charts, becoming a crowd favorite. Nicole Hale’s creation, “The Poppy Hawaiian,” also from Your Pie in Athens, was a strong contender and came in second place earning 100 points in the Pi Day Challenge.

There were a lot of enthusiastic participants in this year’s challenge. And rightfully so, not only were we giving away one grand prize, but each of the top ten finalists received a $31.40 Your Pie gift card redeemable at any Your Pie location so they could enjoy a few craft pies on us!

The grand prize $314 Visa gift card was awarded through a drawing. Participants earned points through submitting a pie, voting, receiving votes and bonus points for winning the Pie of the Month contest. Each point earned by participants equaled one entry into the challenge. Once all points were calculated and entries submitted, the winner of the Pi Day Contest was chosen by random drawing. In the end, after all the flour, ahem… we mean dust had settled, Frances Wilson, was announced as the winner of this year’s grand prize of a $314.00 Visa gift card. But what everyone is really wondering is…what will she spend the windfall on? Sky diving, shopping, a brand new camera…the possibilities are endless.

Thank you again to all of our customers that helped make this Pi Day an enormous success. Enjoy some pictures from this year’s Pi Day and visit our facebook page and see if you were caught on camera at one of our locations. Please share your Pi Day experience and why it may just be the best holiday of the year.

Just because Pi Day is over doesn’t mean our love of Pi dies. The great thing about a circle is it just keeps going. Come out to your local Your Pie and celebrate the circle again and again and again!

Ingredient Spotlight: Dough for it!

Posted by on Mar 27, 2012 in Blog, Ingredient Spotlight | 0 comments

Some say Italian is a dead language. We prefer to think of it as a bread language. You see, the recipe responsible for creating the circular crust of your favorite craft pies is an old family secret hailing all the way from the Italian isle of Ischia, where nonnas (noh-na-s: grandmothers [Italian]) from Roma to Verona have spent years perfecting the careful balance of crisp, light and airy crust. So step inside our kitchen and discover the tasty tradition that over the years has become the eatable essence of Your Pie. (But please, no cameras. We don’t give away our secrets to just anyone.)

Pizza comes in all sorts, shapes and sizes and everyone has their own unique style of eating it. However, there is one thing that all pizzas have in common: dough. It’s where it all begins and is what helps some pies, quite literally, rise above the rest. And so, in the words of our favorite singing Austrian governess, “let’s start at the very beginning. It’s a very good place to start.” Dough, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, doughhhhh! (For the record, Julie Andrews would love our dough).

Here at Your Pie we serve three types of dough – traditional white, hearty whole wheat and gluten-free – allowing more people to enjoy it in more ways for more generations to come. The simple goodness of our dough can be attributed to the fact that it contains only 5 simple ingredients. We use only what is needed to construct a flavorful foundation and leave the rest of the creative process up to you. Our job is to make sure that you as the artist have the perfect canvas on which to build your masterpiece. (Picasso is SO last century. Pie-casso is where it’s at).

When making dough, our chefs understand the power of a good (great) flour. We use a special type of flour suited for the heat and humidity of the Southeast. This allows the dough to rise and stretch just how it’s supposed to and just how it has for centuries in the Mediterranean climate of Italy. We then add semolina – a coarse, purified wheat middlings commonly used in making pastas, soups and breakfast cereals, and best used (in our humble, yet expert and widely agreed-upon opinion) in making personalized brick-oven-baked pizza pies. After mixing together flour and semolina, we stir in the yeast that is so important in the making of both craft pizza and craft beer (did we mention that yeast is very important). We pour in filtered water and sprinkle the mixture with salt and sugar (this is selfishly so we don’t have to worry about confusing the salt and sugar shakers… but hey it tastes good, too). Lastly, the final product is painted with extra virgin olive oil (or, if we wanted to sound like Rachel Ray, we would call it EVOO… but we don’t… so yea, extra virgin olive oil) – giving it an outside that is just as tantalizing in taste and texture as it is inside.

So, if you’re ever wondering what we’re cooking up for you, dough not fear! Our recipe is as simple (and as popular on the tongues of high school chorus teachers everywhere) as “dough, re, mi!” Next time you’re craving the crust, dough not forget Your Pie’s promise of dough-licious authenticity. Just dough it! It’s a dough-brainer! Too many dough puns? Dough somethin’ about it!

“It ain’t easy being green…!” so says Kermit the Frog and so said those being Irish over the weekend.  As we look in the rear view mirror at another great St. Patrick’s Day weekend we want to thank everyone who came out to Your Pie Savannah and all over Your Pie locations to grab a craft pie, a cold Guinness and celebrate with friends and family.

Your Pie Savannah was in the center of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration, serving up piping hot craft pizzas and cold beer to parade goers all day long. Long time friend of Your Pie Savannah, BP Palmer stopped by during the festivities on his new chopper bike (see photo above). Check out BP’s other bike creations & pics at our Sandfly location and on our facebook page. A beautiful day it was lads & lassies. Thanks to all!

Pie Day

Posted by on Feb 27, 2012 in Blog | 0 comments

That one day out of the year when geometry and gastronomy are served on a plate side-by-side is almost here! It’s Pie Day and it’s only 14 days away.

Try to imagine a world with no Pi (and subsequently, no Pie). Would it be a world at all? We don’t think so, either – at least no world we want to be a part of. On March 14th, Your Pie is celebrating living in a world of Pi (and Pie) with our 3rd annual Pie Day. In particular, we are celebrating the most sensationally succulent circular creation of all time – the pizza. We like to think of it as the circle of life. It gives shape to our world, and to our pies – and on 3.14, it will cost only $3.14 to enjoy.

(Now that’s what we call living!)

In honor of the number that makes our world go round, Your Pie is giving away over $600 in prizes – a grand prize of $314 and ten other prizes of $31.40.

There are four ways to enter and earn points:
1. Submit a Pie in the What’s Your Pie contest for 10 points
2. Vote in the What’s Your Pie contest for 1 point
3. Promote your entry in the What’s Your Pie contest and earn 1 point every time your pie is voted for
4. Win the What’s Your Pie contest for 25 points

Ten $31.40 Your Pie Gift Certificates will be awarded to the top 10 point-leaders. One grand prize winner will receive a $314 VISA Gift Certificate and will be randomly drawn from all entries into the contest, giving every pie-loving participant an opportunity to win the dough. No purchase is required to enter and every point is an extra entry into the contest, so keep your eye on the pies and bake in as many points as you can!

Enter for your chance to win at YourPie.com/PieDay

This month’s What’s Your Pie contest kicks off March 1st and voting will be open until March 20.

Come celebrate the circle on 3.14.

Be there or be, well… square.

Craft Pizza and Beer Spotlight

Posted by on Feb 24, 2012 in Blog | 0 comments

Your Pie Roswell's beer collection

It has been said that, “beauty lies in the eye of the beer holder.” While we historically thought this mantra trivial and borderline obnoxious, we recently found its deeper truth in the new craft pizza/craft beer pairings being brewed up at Your Pie. “Inspired by your world, crafted by Your Pie,” the new craft pizza collection, features flairs and flavors from different regions around the world. And because Your Pie is a craft restaurant of sorts – inspired by founder’s family ties to the island of Ischia – it is only appropriate that its craft pies be washed down with regional craft brews.

So what exactly is “craft” beer? The technical definition of craft beer is beer brewed in small, independent breweries. Society dubs it the drink of choice for skinny-jeaned art majors and all 27 members of Arcade Fire. We here at Your Pie use the word “craft” to describe the passion and respect that goes into creating the distinct personality of each individual brew. We consider our pies “craft” not only because they are the products of that same passion and consideration, but also because they are arts & crafts projects in and of themselves. They are masterPIEces worthy of museYUMS, and, once again, much better than our wordplays.

We probably don’t have to convince any of you to throw back a brewskie. However, we do want to advise you on your selection.  With ales, lagers, light brews, dark brews, in-between-hues brews, and the myriad of little-known selections that local hipsters sip ironically but will never reveal the names of (indie cred, guys), it’s easy to become overwhelmed and reach for the nearest can of watered-down big business beer out of confusion and convenience. However, if you want your pairing to be tasty, don’t be hasty. Beer/food pairings are much like dating relationships. Some bring out the best, while others should be avoided at all costs. Misguided food/beer pairings are more easily avoided than ill-fated relationships and luckily for you, our taste in beer is far superior than our taste in dates (although the former often comes in handy when coping with the latter).

Different beers serve different purposes when it comes to the food they’re paired with. For example, sweeter brews balance spice, while more hoppy, bitter brews emphasize it. Let’s tap this keg a little further, shall we?

  • The nutty flavor of English-style brown ale bolsters the strength of robust cheeses, especially cheddar and Parmesan. Pairing it with a traditional pie, like the Healthy Collection Cheese or the Ischia’s Pie, will provide a simple, yet sensational experience.
  • The gusto of hoppier American ales goes great with hearty meat toppings, such as chicken, Italian sausage, or meatballs, and has a bitterness that keeps the acidity of tomato sauce in check and wipes the palate clean.
  • Malt brews, typically infused with dessert tones like caramel, chocolate, or toffee, harmonize with the savory elements of grilled or smoked foods. The sweetness helps to reduce the intensity of spicy flavors, so try sipping a malty brown ale alongside our Thai Pie to learn everything you need to know about sugar and spice and everything nice (sorry, Mother Goose).
  • Amber ales are also good thirst busters and can help extinguish the heat of our zesty BBQ Chicken Pie or hot-sauce doused My Pie.

Your Pie's Thai Pie tastes great with a malt brew

If you’re still unsure as to which beer best compliments your favorite pie, the Your Pie brew crew will be more than “hoppy” to help you navigate our extensive draft list or select between our unique bottled microbrews. So come get crafty at Your Pie and discover why beauty truly does lie in the eye, and on the plate, of the beer holder.
